Why CSV for archives
Excel is nicer to read today. CSV is easier to load into unknown tools in 2032. For cold storage I prefer CSV; for immediate review I might keep both.
Sync completeness first
Export from a device that actually has the historical events. An incomplete sync produces a confident, wrong archive.
Naming saves future hours
2023-Q3-clientwork.csv beats final-final-export.csv. Include the calendar name if you archive several.
A note from someone who lost a year once
I used to keep “the archive” as whatever happened to still be syncing. Then a calendar unsubscribe removed years of client work from the phone I trusted. The CSV I almost exported the week before would have been enough for taxes. Almost does not count.
Now I treat archive exports like photo backups: slightly annoying, dated in the filename, duplicated somewhere that is not the same device. If that sounds heavy, export only the years that would hurt to lose.
Portability over polish
